Closing time inspection checklist

Taking the time to inspect before closing up for the night is a crucial part of running a safe and secure business. Whether you’re protecting against fire, theft, or cyber risks, a consistent end-of day routine helps prevent losses and ensures peace of mind when your team returns the next morning.

Fire Prevention

  • Has all equipment been turned off?
  • Are all flammable materials stored in a CSA-approved cabinet or designated area?
  • Are combustibles stored away from heating appliances?
  • Has a fire watch been completed? Have at least 30-60 minutes passed since the end of any hot work? Has a fire inspection of the hot work area been completed?
  • Are oily rags or other spontaneous combustion materials stored in metal safety containers?
  • Is temporary heating equipment unplugged and turned off?

Crime Prevention

  • Are the interior and exterior lights set on timers or motion sensors for overnight visibility?
  • Are all doors, windows, and bay doors locked and padlocked as needed?
  • Has a walkthrough confirmed that no unauthorized individuals are inside?
  • Has the alarm or security system been activated?
  • Are equipment, customer property, and inventory stored securely?
  • Is cash locked in a CSA-approved safe?
  • Are high-value items stored out of sight from windows or main doors?

Digital security

As technology becomes more integrated into daily operations, it’s essential to protect your digital assets, especially after hours.

  • Have all point-of-sale (POS) systems and business computers been logged out or powered down?
  • Is the Wi-Fi network secured or disabled overnight, if not in use?
  • Are passwords stored securely, with no sensitive documents left visible?
  • Are remote access tools, such as mobile-connected security systems, active and sending alerts?
  • Has your team been trained on basic cybersecurity protocols, including phishing awareness and data handling?

Employee awareness and end-of-day protocols

A strong closing routine starts with informed employees. Make sure your team knows what to do and why it matters.

  • Is the closing checklist posted in a visible and accessible spot?
  • Has the staff received up-to-date training on fire, theft, and digital risk prevention?
  • Is there a designated person responsible for completing and verifying the checklist each night?
  • Have any safety concerns or maintenance issues from the day been logged or reported?
